This has been an extensive shift of opinions, and I will only add a few comment. My position is the Medical Director of the New Hair Clinic in Lund (not Malmoe!). In general I agree with the Administrator. Since he is goinig to comment upon our clinic, it might be a little delicate to say this, but so far I have found very few (if any) statements from whyatt that are opposite to my own opinion or knowledge. Certainly that goes for what has been said about strip surgery: In wrong hands, possible slaughter. In correct usuage a very usuful, safe and priceworth technique. We do appr. 350 such procedures every year, so I speak from experience. We also do FUE every week, but I ALWAYS try to get the patient into strip, if I cannot see any advantage of doing FUE for him.
It is easy to forget that FUE is a surgical technique, and therefore a subject of individual, biologicical responce from the patient in the healing process. Allthough scars might be of minimal practical influence in FUE, they are seldome completely abscent. If you shave and look really good you can see some shift in pigmentation, especially if the harvest has been extensive. In some cases, white spots are quite obvious, and might even be a probleme in shaving the head. Dr Rassman from the New Hair Institute showed an example of that some years ago on his blogg.
I will not comment about the work beeing done on my own clinic, and I will not denye that also this clinic has produces terrible scars, pitting and wrongly directed hair growth. As mentioned, surgery deals with patients showing different capacity of healing and cooperation, and even with the best technique and a fully cooperative, non-smoking patient, a complication (like infection) sometimes occures. What I can assure is that we try our best, and we do change our technique if we think that there is a better alternative. We used to do the implantation with a pointy scalpel blade. It was difficult (but not impossible) to direct the hair growth with that device. Now we use the same, smaller implanter for FUE and strip grafts, and thus are able to controle angles much easier. And like dr Husseine, we do understand the psychological aspect of hair loss, and try hard to meet the patients need without taking advantage of his vulnurable situation. Cerainly, now and then we fale also in this field, after all we are only human beeings.
